Design Studio Amsell Berlin

We are dedicating some time and posts to present our current designers that we are very happy to be able to collaborate with. (more info from earlier post)

Today we would like to present Design studio Amsell Berlin, an amazing design duo that established in 2004 and have since then come up with several interesting, beautiful and functional design objects for some of Sweden’s leading design producers. We are happy and proud that they have created two strong designs for Okko!

Designstudio Amsell Berlin is Pia Amsell and Barbro Berlin. The studio’s work cover design of products, table top, lighting, furnitures, interiors, patterns and graphics.Their ambition is to create functional products with a senseful expression that simplifies and improves every day life for many people

“In our work we often find inspiration in the beauty and intelligence of nature. We combine that with our passion for the possibilities of a material with a curiousity for peoples needs and desires at home and at work. The result is harmonic and functional products for the daily life as well as for celebrations.” – Amsell Berlin

The first collaboration resulted in Dots, acoustic panels made in frameless peat fiber. An natural and ecological sound absorber with extremely good acoustic propertys (sound absorption class A).

The panels are made in two variations as they are made both convex and concave or as positive and negative reliefs. The excess material from one, makes the pattern on the other. You can use only concave or convex panels on a wall for a smooth wall or you can mix them to get a relief wall. The panels are available in a wide range of color and pattern combinations.

The second design they created is Unikko!

A unique sound-absorbing sculpture that hangs freely in space. It swirls slightly from the draft, creating a spatially integrating work of art.

The inspiration for Unikko also came from nature in the form of a swaying poppy flower and found its shape in a playful workshop together with designer Anna Rotlin where the hemp sheets were cut, folded and combined in many different ways before Unikko found its shape. The air pockets created by the folding give Unikko a very high level of acoustic sound absorption.

Unikko is made from hemp sheets. Hemp as a material is one of the most useful sustainable materials that nature has to offer and that in itself makes it really interesting to work with.

Unikko comes in two different sizes that you can play with and place in many different ways. They can be hung in one size symmetrically and close together to build a soft organic ceiling and they can be hung asymmetrically at different lengths for an airy impression. They fit perfectly in public places such as museums, auditoriums, restaurants, libraries, etc. with high ceilings that often need a design that is intended for both eyes and ears.
